With NHL Free Agency just around the corner, I took a look at some of the players out there, and took the liberty of ranking these players by position, and by value on the market. Don't assume that I am assessing the players value, or overall score. I am considering age of the player, recent playing history and potential to develop.

Seeing as I'm a Kings fan, this has been something I've been interested in since the playoffs started. So here we go,

Goalies

J.S. Giguere
N. Backstrom
D. Hasek
C. Joseph
M. Garon

Honourable Mention: M. Dunham, J. Thibault, J. Markannen, D. Aebischer

Defensemen

B. Rafalski
S. Souray
M. Schneider
A. Sutton
D. Sydor
K. Timmonen
S. Hannan
C. Chelios
B. Stuart
C. Rivet

Honourable Mention: C. Sarich, B. Sopel, T. Poti, G. DeVries, J. Fischer, A. Ference, R. Hamrlik, D. Markov, V. Vishnevski, S. Ozolinsh

Left Wing

P. Kariya
B. Shanahan
R. Smyth
L. Nagy
T. Bertuzzi

Honourable Mention: Tkachuk, Zednik, Roberts, Dupuis, Freisen

Right Wing

T. Selanne
J. Blake
B. Guerin
M. Recchi
A. Carter

Honourable Mention: J. Sim, Amonte, Bondra, Hartnell, Mogilny (this guy's still in the league??)

Centre

P. Forsberg
D. Briere
C. Drury
S. Gomez
R. Lang

Honourable Mention: Lindros, Arnason, Barnes, Stefan, V. Kozlov, Comrie

As a Kings fan, I'd like to see a few things happen. In this priority, I would like to see my team make the following moves:

1. Sign a goalie.
A goalie like J.S. Giguere would be amazing. Not very realistic, as I don't see him wanting to leave a contender like Anaheim. Backstrom may be a more reasonable player to pursue, and would be a valuable addition to the team. At last resort, a goalie like Thibault could possibly help, and locking up Garon for future development may be a wise move.

2. Sign a scorer.
Cammaleri, Frolov and Kopitar seem to be hitting stride at the same time. All three had great breakout years, and look to have further potential. Adding a veteran presence that can score would help to balance out the offensive attack, and also help ease the load of these young superstars. Ideally, snagging Drury out of Buffalo would be perfect, but considering the market and the crowd of suitors that will be chasing him, someone like Gomez, or Blake might add that extra offensive punch that has been lacking.

3. Sign a long term blue-liner.
Blake is getting up in years, and the gap between him and the younger prospects like Johnson, is too great. They need a mature defensmen who can lead this defense corps into the future. Someone like Sutton would be a great fit in L.A., or a big shot like Souray or Schneider would be a nice addition. Also, if L.A. can go back out and reclaim a player like Sopel, and maybe add someone like Poti, or Stuart, the defense would continue to look very strong for the future.

As I end, I would like to say to all those who don't appreciate my blogging prowess... Suck a dick.

Sources cited:
www.tsn.ca
www.prosportsdaily.com

Division Playoffs

You know what drives me nuts?

Patriots hype.

Your team goes out there and works hard all year. They overcome injuries, suspensions, offensive adversity, and come out with a league best record of 14-2. They go to the playoffs, and enjoy that hard-earned week off. They entertain the media for two weeks, and spend time preparing for their next opponent. Meanwhile some Wild Card games get played, and four teams beat 4 teams that shouldn't have been in the playoff's to begin with. After they do this, they get crowned the next Superbowl Champion.

Now, I'm not stupid, and I'm rarely so ignorant it causes blindness, so I'll admit that Tom Brady, Brian Belicheck and the New England Patriots have historically done very well in the playoffs. In fact, Brady has the best record by a quaterback in the playoffs EVER. He's only lost once. That's impressive. Now, I don't mind giving props where they're due, and I certainly don't mind giving credit to the New England Patriots. However, I listen to alot of NFL Radio, and I read ALOT about NFL playoff football, and all I see is people talking about how good the Patriots are, and how easily they will beat the Chargers this week.

It angers me to no end, that NOONE give the Chargers any credit. People seemed to have forgot about the NFL MVP, and the BEST REGULAR SEASON RECORD. This team is no slouch, and while I'm not going to tell you that they are going to handle the Patriots with ease, they deserve to be given the edge on this "re-tooled", "re-built" Patriots team.

San Diego is NOT the New York Jets (who the Pats struggled with for 3 quarters last week). Their pass rush is far better (#1 in the NFL), their secondary is completely healthy (the Jets were missing 2 starters) and their offense is no slouch either (#4 in the NFL). Oh, and don't forget about our running attack (#1 in the NFL).

Sure, we've got a rookie quarterback who has never played a playoff game in the NFL, and sure we've got Coach Schottenheimer (Marty-ball) who is 5-12 in the playoffs, but first off, I've heard the inexperience card played against Rivers earlier this year, before the season started. Well, I guess they weren't totally right on that one. And it's easy to forget that Marty lost most of his playoff games to a significant quarterback who played in Denver. You may know him- John Elway.

All I want is for the Chargers to be shown a little respect. I'm not claiming that they will walk all over the Pats this weekend, but I do think they will win. Can someone just agree with me?

That's all I got, and here's my weekend picks:

Eagles @ Saints = Saints

Seahawks @ Bears = Bears

Colts @ Ravens = Ravens

Pats @ Chargers = Chargers

THEY DON'T CALL IT "WILD CARD WEEKEND" FOR NOTHIN...

Expect the most this weekend as you tune your T.V. in to the NFL wild card games. They should be good ones, and should spark some heat. Since it's been so long since I've posted, I thought I should at least get something in print for the wind down of the NFL while I've still got something to write about. Let me go over the matchups for this weekend, and make some picks.

Rather than bore you with Chargers propoganda, let me tell you exactly who IS going to show up this weekend, and who is NOT going to show up this weekend.

Cheifs @Colts

In this matchup there are two things for sure: One of them being that the Colts absolutely DO NOT have a run defense. The other being that the only thing the Cheifs do well on offense is RUN THE BALL. Despite my hatred for him, Larry Johnson WILL show up this weekend, and should have a hay day running the ball against the Colts. The Colts D is fast, but small, and struggles to make tackles in the open field, and you guessed it, that's where LJ is strongest. Peyton Manning may be one of the best QB's to ever play the game, but Payton is a whopping 3-6 in the playoff's and for some reason struggles to play past Week 17. Don't expect much from him either, as the Cheifs secondary has proven to be strong with the presence of Ty Law this year. There isn't a better matchup for the Cheifs in the 2007 playoffs. They won't do much past this game, but expect a win from the Cheifs in this one.

Jets @ Patriots

"Mangenius" and the Jets stole one from the Pats earlier this year, and have shocked the NFL world by even making the playoffs this year. They strolled into week 17, only having to beat the lowly Oakland Raiders to make their first playoff appearance in ages. They did that, and now it's anyone's guess how they'll do now that they're in the big show. My hopes are high, and my underdog side is rooting for the Jets but you really can't pick them to beat the seasoned veterans that the Patriots are. Under the coaching of Belicheck and the leadership of Brady, the Pats will walk over the Jets. The Pats secondary is strong enough, even without Harrison to stop the air attack of the Jets, and the running game isn't much to talk about in New York. Despite the Pats struggles at home this year, they're bound to play well in this one, cause well... it's the playoffs and that's what the Pats do best. Pats beat the Jets.

Cowboys @ Seahawks

When your coach is Bill Parcell's and your lady is Jessica Simpson, you shouldn't have much to complain about. Oh wait, but you have T.O. for a receiver. Well, you win some you lose some. Tony Romo faces an old, beat up and weak secondary in the Seahawks this week. Hasslebeck and Alexander have looked rusty all year, and are yet to find their step. Expect the Cowboys to put up alot of points on the Seahawks early, and take the noisy crowd of Seattle out of it early. Alexander the not so great, and Hasslebeck will struggle to keep up, and will never overcome the Cowboys. Parcells wins, and for all those Eagles fans, you guessed it.. you might be able to play T.O. one more time this year.

Giants @ Eagles

Super Gay Garcia and the Eagles will trounce the Giants this week. Eli and his erratic throwing will produce turn overs, the Giants D that has been hurt all year will allow the Eagles to move the ball, and the Eagles will win. With the spirit of Vince Papale alive and strong, the Eagles will soar. Philly's D had it's struggles this year, but after McNabb went down, the D stepped up and has allowed just 15 pts per game in the past 5. The Giants have no leadership. None from Strahan, none from Eli, none from Tiki, and most of all, none from Coughlin. Coughlin is a joke. He has no job after the year, and regrettably, T.O. will get to face the Philly boys one more time, this year. Eagles beat the Giants.

Check em out, put some money down. I won't be wrong.

That's all i got.

HOT or NOT?

As I consume my propostorous amounts of sports entertainment, I'm often induced to long periods of thought. Lots of the time it's complete crap, that makes no sense, even to me, and sometimes, it's as valuable as a rare diamond, but impossible for me to put to paper. But lately, I've been asking myself some questions, that I think need answering.

First up,

How bad are the Toronto Raptors?

I don't talk much about basketball, and that's for a good reason. Unlike football and hockey, I don't know much about basketball, and I don't care much for basketball. But, from what I can tell, the Toronto Raptors are bad - like Houston Texans bad, but worse. I remember thinking to myself in the offseason, "man, it seems like the Raptors are making some really good signings. I can't pronounce any of their names, but all these Europeans are supposed to be great." NO. They've been awful. Maybe Toronto should just fold, or move to New York. It doesn't seem right that Basketball is the only sport to NOT have two teams in New York.

How good is Drew Brees?

Drew Brees has revived the New Orleans Saints from what seemed like impossible depths. He's been outstanding, and put up some of the best offensive numbers in the NFL. Add that to the success he has had in San Diego and it's indisputable that Drew Brees is a great quarterback. Now what really makes me wonder how good he is, is how well Philip Rivers has played this year. I can't help but think that three years behind the tutelage of Drew Brees made Rivers the quarterback he is today. I think that it has had a huge impact on him, and is just another addition the list of great accomplishments Drew Brees calls his resume.

How stupid is J.P. Riccardi?

Is it just me, or have the Blue Jays signings of this offseason been about as intelligent as political speech by Pauly Shore? Last summer, I thought J.P. was a genius. Overbay, Ryan, Burnett, Molina, Glaus, the guy was doing everything right. He spent some bucks, and boy were they in the right place. But then this year, he has done nothing, despite a bump in salary space. He's signed Big Hurt, which is an iffy, but popular call. Now he's signed Royce Clayton, who I didnt even know the hell he was. And what happened with Rod Barajas? He had him signed, then Barajas backed out? What the hell? And to top off the stupid decisions, he signs Zaun. NOT ONLY, does he sign him, but gives him over 7 M for a two year contract. SHOCKING. It could just be me, but I think J.P. needs to lay off the reefer.

Can the Buffalo Sabres make it last?

The Sabres are good. No doubt about it. Can this winning streak they're on last the entire season though? Just something I was thinking about. And for that matter...

How good is Cristobal Huet?

The guy has played amazing for the past month and is a huge reason the Habs are as good as they are. Props.

How accurate are the numbers on Vanderjagt?

Is it strange that the all time most accurate kicker in NFL HISTORY is without a job? Vanderjagt got released this week, and not that I really care ( I think he's an assclown and an embarrassment to Canadians) but surely, the guy who ALL TIME in the NFL has the highest kicking average should have a job somewhere? Shouldn't he?

Anyways, just some thoughts I've had.

That's all I got.

THE BANDWAGON HAS ARRIVED.

Well it's about that time of year. The time of year where many of you will hop off the Steelers bandwagon, and either rejoin the Colts bandwagon you rode for most of last year, or find a new team. May I make a suggestion? The Chargers bandwagon might be a nice choice. I'm sure it will be filling up quickly, so you might want to grab your spot early so that you have more "cred" than the other bandwagon jumpers.

The Chargers are an outstanding 8-2, just like most of my fantasy teams, and it's for a good reason. They have the best player in the league in their backfield in LaDainian Tomlinson. (Ok, that's arguable. What's not is whether or not he's the best back in the league, cause he definately is that.) They have a blossoming quarterback in Philip Rivers, who this week was mentioned in the same breath as Joe Montana. Not bad company for a rookie quarterback noone gave any credit to at the beginning of the season. The Chargers have a defense that has allowed a lot of points recently, but is also missing players such as Merriman, Foley, Phillips, Castillo, and during their last game had drives where they lost McCree, Cromartie, and Edwards. When this D gets healthy (right around playoff time) they're going to be dominant just like they were at the beginning of the season.

So, now that you've been convinced, sign your name up and get on the bandwagon early, cause the Chargers are here to stay.

That's all I've got.

THE DEATH OF THE WEEKLY PREVIEW

You may be asking yourself, "where's my week 9 and 10 preview?" or you may not be asking yourself, since they tended to be very dry, and uninteresting. Not that my other posts have offered real jems of wit and charm, but I think the pics have at least spiced them up a bit.
What I really find myself thinking about lately is a few things. NFL.... Women.... NHL... NFL.... Women's Beach Volleyball... NFL... NHL... Getting a dog...NFL.. home renovations... NHL.. and on and on. You get the picture. After 9 weeks of NFL football I've watched alot of great games, read alot of good articles, and heard alot of good commentary and discussion on the NFL. Analylsts have talked about mid-season MVP's, teams that are most likely to go to the Superbowl, T.O., lots of T.O., and several other things, like how bad the Arizona Cardinals are. Analysts make their picks, and share their opinions, because that's their job. But there's one thing that continues to drive me nuts about sports media, and sports analysts; Making stories out of things that happen that aren't really stories, and making bigger deals out of situations that are in fact small potatoes.
For example, I've heard ALOT of talk this week about T.O. and the incident in the endzone last week, and I've heard even MORE talk about the pass he dropped that would have been a guaranteed touchdown. NEVER in my life have I heard so much talk about a dropped pass. Every week receivers drop passes. Ocho drops em, Tory drops em, hell even Jerry Rice dropped passes. They even dropped passes that hit them in the chest. Passes that hit them in the hands. Passes that hit them in the hands while they were standing still. The catch that T.O. dropped last week was NOT an easy catch. He was running all out, and fully extended. The ball rolled off his finger tips and he bobbled it - while running at top speed. IT HAPPENS. T.O. DID NOT LOSE THAT GAME FOR DALLAS. End of story.
Secondly, I've heard alot of talk about who the best team in the league is right now. Some people say Indy, some say the Bears, even still some say the Chargers. Of course I refuse to write from a completely unbiased POV, so I'll just go ahead and pick the Chargers. They've got a great combo of Offense with Defense.
Ok, but seriously? Can someone tell me what has changed with the Colts in a year, other than Tony Dungy's kid has died, and every player on that team is a year older? Oh and don't forget, they've lost their stud running back in Edge. This team is no different from last year. The Colts will continue to impress during the regluar season and will put up a stunning record just like last year, BUT when it comes to playoffs this year, the Colts WILL choke. They're Defense, especially against the run is TERRIBLE, and by the end of the year every Defense in the league will know how to stop them, just like last year. Peyton Manning is great. He's got my vote for MVP this year, but singlehandedly Peyton CAN be stopped, and will be by the end of the year.
The best team in the league right now is the Chicago Bears. Their Defense is astounding. They're pass rush on the D-line is fearsome, their linebackers are overwhelming, and smart to boot, and their secondary is second to none. That Defense will continue to win games for them, and if their offense can return to the form they had in the first 5 games, and manage to NOT turn the ball over, this team WILL win the Superbowl.

NFL.com did some mid-season award nominations with all their writers. It was boring, and it seemed that everyone except for Rod Woodson (who apparently has a hard on for the Chargers just like me) picked the same players. Very compelling guys, thanks for the article. F.

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/9790388

Here's my picks. If yours are different, I wanna know. Post a comment.
Offensive MVP: Peyton Manning - I know it's the same as every person on NFL.com, but seriously, how can you argue against him?
Defensive MVP: Ray Lewis - Everything in me wants to pick Merriman, and I think I rightfully could, but Ray Lewis has revived the Baltimore D, and they look as solid as ever.
Rookie of the Year: Laurence Maroney - For a rookie back to pick up a Belicheck offense as quick as he has is astounding. I don't care who you are, even if you do catch Drew Brees passes.
Coach of the Year: Lovie Smith - The best bang for your buck. No matter how much or how little cash you throw his way.
Superbowl Pick: Chargers - AFC. Bears - NFC. All bias aside, I can't see a better team in each of these conferences. They're Defenses are outstanding, and the offenses compliment them well.

That's all I got.

THE TEN... ERR... NINE COMMANDMENTS

I'm an adimate Fantasy Player. And no I don't mean D & D. I'm a vet when it comes to Fantasy Hockey (I still suck at it tho), and am a new jack with the Fantasy Football, and Fantasy Baseball. But I'm not gonna lie to you, I'm hooked. Fantasy Baseball, a game about a sport I, until recently, barely followed, surprsingly entertained me. The baseball season led me into the football season, and now I'm hooked. It's a full blown addiction. I'd even consider it a solid "hobbie". The number of hours I can spend tinkering with line-ups, haggling over trades, or contemplating add/drops is mind-baffling. Literally hundreds of hours are spent in front of a computer screen reading up on players, finding out who will start, who's hurt and who's on a cold or hot streak. Everyday things like relationships, work, and school are soon set aside for the glory of a Fantasy Win. Each and every Sunday is now spent watching football, and not only my beloved Chargers, but every game. I'm sitting on my couch, flipping from channel to channel, while my laptop sits on my lap with the stats for each game updating themselves live. I'm obsessed. I'm a man apart. FANTASY SPORTS ARE GLORIOUS.

However, as I've coached and GM'd the "Burnsy's Bruisers", the "Revello Charge", and "Burnsy's Mushroom Bruisers", I've realized that there is a code of ethics, or a "fantasy etiquette" if you will. To say it straight there are some things that piss me off about fantasy sports.

There are some things that are expected of you when you join a fantasy league, and if you are even considering joining one, read this list so your not the assclown of your league. Consider this the ten commandments for Fantasy Sports. That is if I can think of ten...

1. When you signing up for your league, pick a funny name. And now when I say a funny name, I should stress that it is NOT funny to randomly hit keys on your keyboard and claim that that is your team name. Ex: "dtgbt". Not funny. There are a plethora of funny names out there for your fantasy team, such as "Burnsy's Mushroom Bruisers", or "Houshamazilly". These are funny names, because they're not outrightly derogatory of obvious to the unlearned fantasy player, but rather they have a history in and of themselves, and provide humor to anyone who may have been involved in Fantasy Football.

2. If you want to stand a chance in your league, show up for your fantasy draft. The worst mistake you can make in Fantasy is starting off with a bad team. It will leave you crippled for the entire team and in a place where you are constantly hunting on the waiver wire for useful players. As fun and rewarding as that may be, your never going to win a championship with a bunch of dudes off the waiver wire. And remember, take a kicker early. The good ones go fast.

3. Do your research. If the last time you watched an NHL game, the Montreal Canadiens were in the finals, hook yourself up to the internet and do a little research. Find out who the good players in the league are NOW. Hell, if your too lazy to do any substantial reading, just check the stats page of the previous year. That should give you a pretty good idea of who you want this year. And please note, the following players have retired: Doug Gilmour (fag), Wayne Gretzky (greatest player ever) and God forbid Tie Domi (Belinda Stronach).

4. Know what will win you games in your league. If your league rewards 3 pts for a goal and 1 pt for an assist, or if your league gives lots of points to RB's and none to QB's, or if SB's are worth triple what HR's are worth, make sure you've loaded up on the right players. Nothing like taking Peyton Manning in a league where rush yards are worth double what pass yards are.

5. Don't ask your buddies in the league for help. Your best friend may be in the same league as you, and your best friend may not touch your sister even if she is Jessica Alba, but when it comes to Fantasy Sports it is cut-throat. Your best friend who saved you from drowning when you were 6 years old is the same friend that would give you Neil Rackers for LadDainian Tomlinson.

6. Check your league regularily. I don't care if you aren't obsessed with Fantasy Sports. I know what your saying, "Burnsy, how could you watch 8 hours of football every Sunday? I only want to watch my team play, cause I have a real life.". Well it's not the end of the world if you don't obsess over your team, but at least have the respect for you competitors to check in on the league on a regular basis. Check in and see if there's some trade offers on your table. Check to see that your not starting someone who's been on the IR for two months. Have some friggin self-respect.

7. If someone offers you a trade, have the common sense and decency to either REJECT or ACCEPT the trade. There is nothing more frustrating than offering someone the blockbuster trade of the year, and them not responding for four weeks. Finally, after four weeks of looking at the trade they intended on rejecting on Day 1, they accidently bump the reject button and crush your dreams of the trade of a lifetime. You've had your hopes up for the entire four weeks thinking that they must be thinking long and hard about it, only for them to have no interest at all in what your pursuing. This is EASILY the most annoying thing about fantasy sports.

8. If your gonna trash talk your Fantasy Sports message board, please think about what you type before you randomly type whatever comes to your mind at the moment. There is nothing worse than feeling like you just got trash talked by someone who doesn't possess a grade 3 education. They are mis-spelling words like a Grade 2 autistic quadrapalegic at a spelling bee for junior highs, and bragging up their kicker who scored them 13 pts and won them the game. Noone can read or understand what you're saying, and even if they could they probably wouldn't care cause if you're in Grade 2, autistic, and a quadrapalegic, then you're probably in dead last in your league. Go roll home.

9. When you win your league, and your the Champ, give everyone a peice of your mind. Take a page from the Ocho Cinco library of trash talk, and let everyone know how good you are. Compose a well written draft explaining how you've exposed their every weakness and dominated them like a leather bound sex-fiend. Let it all out.

10. Shoot,.. I think all i got is 9...

That's all I got.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://theburnsybarn.blogspot.com/2006/11/ten-err-nine-commandments.html' title='THE TEN... Officiating was struggling, goal scoring was down, and they just just resolved a lockout that seemed to destroy the league. We've just passed another lockout, but this time the league seems to have come back full swing. The game is more exciting, the officiating much tighter, and goal scoring is higher than it used to be. However, I think the most impressive thing about the current NHL is the development of young talent, and the amount of young talent that currently exists in the league.

For years the NHL seemed to struggle to develop talent. There seemed to be a core group of players and a select number of superstars that dominated the league. They were an upper echelon and a group set apart. Players like Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg, Steve Yzerman, Mike Modano, and Ray Bourque, just to name a few. Highly touted rookies would enter the league, but would soon fizzle, or take three to four years to develop into a quality NHL player. These days though, it seems new superstars are born each year. We've had players like Crosby, Ovechkin, and Malkin enter the league and instantly dominate, and that's obvious to all. But we've also had players like Marek Svatos, Brad Boyes, and Jussi Jokinen become great players out what seems like nowhere. It's especially exciting to watch the game, and especially if you're a fan of a team that seems to be "rebuilding", because there is real legitimacy in rebuilding. Teams can actually develop talent through the draft without having to wait 5-10 years before being a contender.

So NHL, off comes my hat to you. Not so much Gary Bettman, cause he's a douche bag, but NHL, props to you.

That's all I got.

Sidenote: Wanna vote for the NHL MVP? Among the players to most likely to land the biggest contracts are Barry Zito, Jeff Weaver, and Greg Maddux. All players the Blue Jays likely SHOULD have interest in, but of course won't be able to afford. It looks like the Yankees may have found the answer to their starting rotation problems, and my prediction is that Barry Zito will for sure be the stud on the Yankee's rotation before Christmas.

The Blue Jays on the other hand have alot of questions to answer on their roster. They did some house-cleaning back in August, and cleaned out alot of salary cap room by getting rid of Hillenbrand and Hinske. That leaves them with a couple of holes on the field and lineup, and they've also lost both Zaun and Molina to free-agency. Since the Blue Jays have a hard-on for ancient batcatchers who are far past their prime, it looks like they'll either re-sign Molina, or go after someone like Piazza. Both are probably a bad decision, but who am I to say. I think J.P. Ricardi has done a fine job so far with the Blue Jays considering the division they play in, and the budget he is given. Hopefully he can make some quality signings again this year like the ones he made last year in Troy Glaus, Lyle Overbay, and B.J. Ryan. All those guys paid big dividends.

And J.P. Riccardi, if you're reading, follow this advice:

1. You should have never let O-dog go. Even for Glaus. Go out and do whatever it takes to get him back. God knows our middle infield needs it.

2. Carlos Delgado not only deserves a World Series, but he deserves one in Toronto. Go get em.

3. If we could posssilby get our hands on someone like Bernie Williams, he could do alot to help a young team like the Jays.

That's all I got.

Leafs SUCK

OPEN UP THE HISTORY BOOKS

I recognize this blog has been mostly filled with NFL football, and spots of NHL hockey here and
there, but I promise this blog is actually dedicated to sports, and sports of all kinds. So that means no bowling, NASCAR, or POKER!!! Oh, and unless the Riders win the Grey Cup, no CFL football, cause it's about as entertaining as high school football.

Now, the NHL has left little to the appetite as it has easily quenched the fan's need for action and great storylines. One of the greatest storylines of the year has been the story of the Buffalo Sabres. They have been a team that four years ago was struggling, and looked like there was no light at the end of the tunnel. But, with some rule changes, and some key roster changes, the Buffalo Sabres now find themselves sitting atop the NHL as the team with the best record. Not only do they have the best record, but they have set an NHL record as the second team to start a season 10-0. Congrats Buffalo, I think everyone can recognize that you deserve it.

Now to my favorite story of the week. If you dont find anything about the NFL entertaining, please at least watch ANY of the videos you can find of this guy. He's hilarious, and a personal favorite of mine. Ocho Cinco, you're my hero. There's a few players out there who just bust my hump. They've got attitude, and they've got swagger, and they're constantly annoying me with their antics, and often times handle bar moustaches. Here's a list of my top 5 hated guys in the NFL.

1. Jared Allen - Kansas City Cheifs

This guy starts in the bad books, as he's a Cheif. This guy thinks he's absolutely amazing, and owns San Diego's O-line everytime they play. That's a good enough reason to hate him without seeing this picture.

2. Dallas Clark - Indianapolis Colts

You might know this queer for his antics on the field, and his TD catch against the Steelers last year. Basically, he's the epitomy of a coat tail rider. He sucks. And look at that awful facial hair.

3. Jerry Porter - Oakland Raiders

Does anyone remember when Jerry Porter was good? No. So Porter shut your pie hole, remember that your NOT T.O., and be grateful you have a job, and that your not a crack dealer in Harlem like your cousin Jabril.

4. Eli Manning - New York Giants

This peice of white trash had the audacity to walk away from the Chargers and demand a trade to the Giants. To the GIANTS of all teams. What a flaming homosexual. (Side note: This picure was titled "Eli Manning is a douche". Couldn't have named it better myself.)

5. Micheal Irvin - ESPN Sports

Remember the good ol' days Mike, when a it was fine for a nigga to carry a few grams of Coke with em? Yeah me too. Sure would have been nice if you didn't caught hey? Have you ever watched this guy on the ESPN pre-game shows Sunday? I've never found someone so unentertaining, and so uneducated all at the same time. He should be taken behind a local barn and whooped with leather belt.

That's all I've got.

Leafs SUCK

WEEK 8 PREVIEW:

First off, let me apologize for missing week 7. I know the masses of "Burnsy's Baryard Animals" fans were heartbroken and acosted. However, I'm back for week 8, and I'm back with a vengeance.
I'd like to first look back at the Chargers loss in Arrowhead to the Cheifs in Week 7. Extremely heart-breaking for myself, but I must admit that I thought it may be coming. The Chargers have played awful in Arrowhead recently, and more importantly LT has played TERRIBLE there. I don't know if it's the field, or the fans, or that "Cheif" atmosphere, but these Pilgrims play terrible there. Onward and Upward though, and we should win at home against the Rams.
Here's my picks for the week, and if you're a gambler, I'm gonna give you the call for the Pro-line.

Prediction Pro Line

Arizona (3.20)(3.60)(1.70) Green Bay Green Bay Tie
Atlanta (3.20)(3.60)(1.70) Cincinatti Cincinatti Win
Baltimore (2.75)(3.20)(2.00) New Orleans New Orleans Tie
Houston (2.75)(3.20)(2.00) Tennessee Houston Tie
Jacksonville (3.60)(3.90)(1.55) Philly Philly Win
Seattle (3.45)(3.80)(1.60) Kansas City Kansas City Win
San Fran (7.00)(6.25)(1.05) Chicago Chicago Win
Tampa Bay (5.30)(4.60)(1.30) Giants Giants Win
St. Louis (4.80)(4.40)(1.35) San Diego San Diego Tie
Indianapolis (2.75)(3.20)(2.00) Denver Indy Tie
Jets (2.45)(3.00)(2.30) Cleveland Jets Tie
Pittsburgh (1.30)(4.60)(5.30) Oakland Pittsburgh Win
Dallas (3.20)(3.60)(1.70) Carolina Carolina Tie
New England (2.00)(3.20)(2.75) Vikings New England Win

There ya go. The past 5 weeks have been full of exciting action, great story lines, and all the T.O. you can handle. The Bears have become the team to love, and the action in their games has renewed unknown love for the NFL. The Saints have shocked and surprised and become the team America loves (but won't give hurricane aid to), and the Steelers have crapped the preverbial bed with their not so impressive 1-3 start. Anyways, this week is bound to be a great week again, with some close matchups. This week's picks have been hard to make, but here they are.

Chargers over 49ers. This evening, I had the unfortunate luck of not being able to watch Hockey Night in Canada (HNIC). However, this evening as i settled into my couch, and checked hockey scores, I noticed an article on my sports homepage. The article's headline read, "Cassie Campbell makes history as HNIC analyst". Curiously, I clicked the link, hoping I wouldn't read the expected. My hopes were strewn about, and broken as I slowly read that Cassie Campbell had been a color commentator for HNIC. I find this sickening, that someone with as little actual hockey experience as Campbell has would be allowed to commentate, let alone show her face on a sacred ceremony like HNIC. I can hear the feminist asking me now, "But Matt, Cassie Campbell has loads of hockey experience. She won our country a gold medal in hockey!". That's garbage. We all know that the Olympic Committee has been misnaming women's hockey for decades. It's not actually hockey, it is more like Ringette, a sport that has been freely given to women by hockey world. So, maybe until HNIC becomes RNIC (Ringette Night In Canada), Cassie Campbell should keep herself away from the CBC studio. That's all I've got.

Leafs SUCK.

CHARGERS REPORT

Well, no amount of smack was gonna save my Chargers from a loss last week. I'll give props where they're due, and I have to pay dues to the Baltimore DST, and also to Steve McNair who had a stellar performance. The Chargers were unable to control the clock in the 4th quarter, and ended up losing because of it. Anyways, this week as they look towards the crippled Steelers, a win looks to be in the cards. I was critisized last week for weak effort on the picks, and critisized for picking the easy games. I think it should be noted that i was 4-0 last week, but I will admit they were all pretty easy games to call. This week won't be the case, with alot of games being close calls, but I'm gonna make 5 picks on games that I think, truthfully could go either way. Here it goes..

Bucs over Panthers
This is a tough division to play in right now, and both these teams have been struggling going into week 3 both 0-2. To many people's demise the Panthers havent been the team they were expected to be. Alot of people picked them to come out of the NFC, and maybe even to win the Superbowl. That dream is many galaxies away, as they're going to be 0-3 after three weeks this year. The Bucs will win this game with a stepped up performance by the D, and with Gruden re-establishing the run. Simms' passing numbers, especially attempts will be way down from last week, and you'll see Cadillac put up the best numbers of the season this week, despite Carolina's potential stingy run D.

Bears over Vikings
Not alot people will call a road team to win in the NFL, but this is a game that can't be called any other way. The Bears have looked unstoppable so far this season, matching the best defense in the league with a firey offense. They put up huge numbers last year, and if you check the fantasy leagues, you'll see the ownership numbers on Bears offensive players went through the roof. Rx looks like he's gonna be the man in Chicago, and with the two guys they've got in the backfield, this offense could be dangerous. Don't think the Vikings have been a slouch, because they've looked strong beating the Skins and Panthers, but this isn't a team that's going to succeed against the Bears.

Indy over Jacksonville
Jacksonville looked like a contender last week as they shut out the Steelers, and people should recognize that they are for real in the AFC this year. They've made a name for themselves on D, and have an O to go with it. BUT, Indy has somehow got lost in the mix this year. I watch alot of media coverage about teams that will be contenders for the Superbowl, and teams that will take their divisions, and alot of people just sort of skim over Indy. Indy won 13 games in a row last year, and have had few losses to that same team. Indy will beat Jacksonville, but the Jags won't go down easy.

Seahawks over Giants
New York has looked good this year so far, and Eli looks like he's going to be the QB everyone expected him to be. The defending NFC champs have also looked good so far this year, but had a shaky start to the season against the Lions. This should be a good game for the watching, but expect the Seahawks to have more rhythm on offense and a stepped up effort from the Defense that will catapult them to a victory.

Cardinals over Rams
The NFC West has been a weak division for a couple of years since the Rams went on their tear in the 90's. The Rams looked sharp in week 1 against the Bronco's, but the Cardinals are a team to be reckoned with this year. They'll be playing at home in their brand new stadium, and expect a HUGE day from the Card's offense as they pick apart the Rams secondary. Cards to win this won.

Well that's my picks. Hopefully they'll be as successful as last weeks. Pay attention this weekend, watch some good football, and don't let your meat loaf.

Leafs SUCK.

Drunkard Paves the Way for Small Town Boy

Growing up in a small town in Canada, there's two things that are important to a kid. One is hockey, and the other is 4x4ing. As I have nothing to say about 4x4ing, I'll talk about hockey. I grew up in a town of 300 people which was 15 mins down the road from a town that was about 1200 people. I played hockey in that town, and so did alot of guys from that area. My family has a history of alchohol abuse; my dad was a drunk, so was my grandfather, and so was my grandfather's dad. The "prime" of my grandfather's drunkeness was spent in the Manor Hotel, which was owned by Dick and Lucille Morrow. In my grandfather's "prime", the Morrow's had a young son who was in minor hockey. His name was Brendan Morrow. One could argue that because of my grandfather's commitment to Manor Hotel, the Morrow's were able to afford minor hockey for young Brendan. Well...

"Brenden Morrow, whose consistent scoring and tenacious checking has made him one of the NHL's best two-way forwards, has landed a US$24.6-million, six-year contract to remain one of the Dallas Stars' core players. "

Now, where's my damn inheritance??

Congrats Brendan. You deserve all that money. In the future, there's sure to be some posts about the Kings, and their season of dominance that lies ahead. It all started tonight as they trashed on the not so Mighty Ducks. Check it out:

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=178019&hubname=

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://theburnsybarn.blogspot.com/2006/09/la-kings.html' title='L.A. It's almost pointless to write about this victory, as it is OBVIOUS to all that San Diego dominated the Titans. It appears to me that San Diego might just be the best team in the NFL. Not because of these past two weeks, because those were two VERY subpar teams, but because this team is proving to have the finishing tools its lacked to win in the past few years. They've been close to awesome before, and have made the necessary tweaks to make them a top contender in the NFL week in and week out. This team suffocated the Titans again on Defense and proved that their team goes far beyond the solid play of Gates and Tomlinson. They allowed just one major score in this game, and it came late enough in the game that noone cared. Tomlinson was barely required to finish a half in this game, as the San Diego offense had by halftime already put the game far out of reach for the Titans. It was nice to see Vince Young this game, but really, does he look like the future of the Titans? Not to me he doesn't. You'll see the Titans kicking themselves in three years when Young is a floundering third string QB, and Matt Leinart is a Pro-Bowl selection with the Cards. Lucky for Leinart he ended up in Arizona. Sucky for the 13 teams that skipped him in the first round of the draft. Unfortunatley for Chargers fans, this is a bye week this week, so we'll be forced to watch more uninteresting games this coming week, but look out in week 4 when the Chargers lay the boots to the Ravens.

The boys on MNF tonight did their top five teams in the NFL after two weeks. Their picks suck, but I'll add my not-so-listened to opinion to the list, and I'll offer better explanations to the list than any of those honky's did. Here's the list:

5. Chicago Bears
The Bears are coming off a season where they posted an 11-5 record. They dominated teams last year with their suffocating defense. Undoubtedly around the league they are one of the most respected defenses. Dudes in fantasy football leagues everywhere picked them early in drafts because they have played with such dominance. HOWEVER, contrary to the opinion of several "professional" NFL analysts, I don't think that a good defense can soley win a championship. But, this Bears team has alot more than a solid defense. They have solved the quarterback controversy they had last year, and Rx has proven to be a top passer in the league so far. He has connected well with his veteran receiver core, and proven to provide a decent offense to compliment their suffocating defense. Look out for this team this year.

4. Cincinatti Bengals
With a dominant offense and an up and coming defense the Bengals poise a threat to the top teams in the AFC to push for a championship. Carson Palmer looks like he's back in game shape, with the potential to only get better. Rudi Johnson has dominated out of the backfield, and the combo of Houshamazilly and CJ at WR will ridicule secondary's all year.

3. Atlanta Falcons
Micheal Vick has alot of things to prove to his critics, but so far this year he's done it. Vick and Dunn combined to break a record this past week, by being the 5th QB/RB duo to both run for 100 yards in a single game. Although this record doesn't come as a surprise to many people, the combination of the top running game in the league and a solid beefed up defensive unit, this team could do alot of damage out of the NFC. They've already beaten two of the top teams in their division, and are poised for a third win when they go into New Orleans next week. With solid play from Vick, and a year where they can avoid the injury bug, and this team will win the NFC South, and compete for the NFC championship.

2. San Diego Chargers
Single handedly the greatest team in the NFL. Ok, maybe not, but this is a team that has made significant upgrades on D this year, with the additions of Pro Bowl safety Marlon McCree at strong safety, and a solid draft at corner, when they picked up Antonio Cromartie. Along with some of the top offensive players in the league, including Tomlinson and Gates, the only question mark on this team remains at QB, where they have the green Phillip Rivers. HOWEVER, what most people forget about Rivers is that he broke the passing yards record in the NCAA in his four years there, and was picked 4th overall in a draft where 4 QB's were taken in the first round, (including someone by the name of Eli Manning, you may have heard of him). This team is poised for success, and could do what the Steelers of '05 did when they went 15-1. Watch out for the Chargers!

1. Indianapolis Colts
The Colts came very close to a perfect season last year, and with all the hype that goes into the NFL during pre-season, it's easy to forget how good the Colts are. Sure, they play in an easy division with the Jaguars, Texans and Titans, but this team is for real. They have the number one offense in the league behind Peyton Manning, and one of the more solid defensive units in the league. They have lost Edge in the offseason, but it will just be a matter of time before Dungy turns Addai into a back just like Edge. It's impossible for a back to be in the same backfield as Manning and not turn into a stud. My prediction is that the Colts will post the top record in the AFC, but again will choke in the playoffs. But this being the top teams after two weeks, I've gotta put the Colts on top.

Leafs SUCK.

And Henderson, why don't you post some replies. I'm tired of antagonizing you to no end.

WEEK 2 PREVIEW

In case you haven't noticed, I practically worship NFL football. I think as a sport, it reings superior to every other. It's gameplay, and strategy go far beyond and are far superior than any other sport. The calibur of athlete that competes in the NFL is second to none. This love, and adoration for this league will continue to bleed into this Blog week after week, so be ready.
Week 1 in the NFL left fans everywhere aching for more. The domination of the Bears, Ravens and Chargers left us in awe. The battle of blood in the Indy/Giants game was glorious. Even the comeback heroics of the Vikings inspired the soul. But, we shouldn't dwell on what's past, as there is a glorious week waiting in the reigns for NFL fans.
This week will showcase a number of divisonal matchups, such as the Bronco's and the Cheifs, the Redskins and the Cowboys, Cardinals and Seahawks, and Indy and the Texans, just to name a few. Be prepared to be glued to your television for a number of these games, as the love lost between these teams won't add up to much.
A preview wouldn't be a preview without someone making some picks. I'm a gambling man, and have already purchased my pro-line tickets, but if you haven't here's some good ones to bet on.
If you want a ticket that WILL win, then here's your picks:

Indy over theTexans
The Texans aren't the two win team they were a year ago, but even with their upgrades on offense, and defense, this team will do nothing to stop the destructive offense of Payton and friends. Expect the Indy offense to put up alot of points, and also expect the front seven of the Colts to put alot of pressure on David Carr, and his inexperienced O-Line, as the Texans will be forced to pass more than usual, with the lack of a steady back in the backfield.
Seattle over the Cardinals
With the addition of Edggerin James, and a healthy Kurt Warner behind centre, there was alot of excitement in Arizona for this year. They are the only team in the NFC West that was expected to challenge the Seahawks in their division, but don't expect a change in standings this year. This should be a high scoring affair, as both the Cards and Hawks field great offenses. If you can pick the Over/Under on this game, definately go over, but don't even think of taking the Cards to pull out the road game upset.
Giants over the Eagles
Alot people would say I'm crazy for picking an away team to win a game in the NFL, as the stats over the years have shown such a dominance by the home team, but this is a game where I think the Giants could pull the upset. McNabb looked good to open up the season, but people soon forget that the Eagles were playing a team that held the worst record in the NFL a year ago. The Eagles remain a floundering seagull on offense, and a hurting unit on defense. The Giants, Eli Manning is coming into his own on offense, and has never before had the offense in NY looking so good. Expect the Giants to not only pull off the win, but to pull it off by a large margin.
Chargers over the Titans
This may seem like a gimme call, but my undying love for the Chargers can't be left off my blog. The Chargers will ABSOLUTELY DOMINATE the Titans. They will suffocate them on defense, and pick them apart on offense. Expect Rivers to have a Pro-Bowl like performance, utilizing Jackson, McCardell, Gates and Tomlinson all over the place. The Chargers offensive numbers will dwarf their past weeks, and the defense will be equally as dominant. Expect a similar game review from last week on the blog.

Hope you enjoy the games this weekend. Don't let your meat loaf.

Oh, and don't forget. The Leafs SUCK

A bud most of his career has finally blossomed to a leaf

Not, that I take pleasure in wasting valuable space on the internet with information about the Toronto Maple Leafs, but this was a news peice, I could not let pass by. In a press conference held earlier today, the Toronto Maple Leafs finally confirmed a widely held opinion that ...

Doug Gilmour is in fact a homosexual.

And I quote,.. My home page is the not so unique www.msn.com . This page usually gives me what I'm looking for in news. It gives me 3 important headlines about local Canadian news, and then also gives me 3 headlines about sports that might be relevant to the Saskatchewan reader. Headlines about hockey, or the Roughriders, or the Blue Jays, or whatever. Now, as my close friends will confirm, I am anything BUT a perfectionist, but the typo I read today could not go uncorrected.

The headline read:
.."DiPietro inks 15 year deal"...

I am POSITIVE that this headline was SUPPOSED to read..
..."DiPietro wins 67.5M lottery"...

It's obvious to all that some random person located in, or somewhere near Long Island was awarded a 67.5 M lottery prize. This person is apparently Rick DiPietro. There is no way that he could have legitimately signed a contract that huge. DiPietro has done NOTHING in Long Island except lead the Islanders to consecutive losing seasons while splitting games with other goaltenders, one of which includes Garth Snow, the jackass who signed this deal with DiPietro.

Just to make sure I wasn't completely out to lunch on DiPietro's stats, I decided to go to the old faithful, www.hockeydb.com . If you haven't discovered this site yet, it is a gem for hockey stats on players from the NHL, right down to the WHL. Check it out sometime. Anyways, I checked DiPietro's stats, and this is how it pans out:

DiPietro, who is now 25, played his first season in the NHL in '00-'01 with the Islanders where he dominated the NHL with a record of 3 wins, 15 losses, and one tie. He also astounded onlookers with his amazing 3.49 GAA. To follow up this season of amazement, he spent two years with the Islanders AHL affiliate, Bridgeport Sound Tigers, where he led them to the playoffs ONCE. This was good enough to get him called back up to the bigs where he astounded the coaches again with his 2.97 GAA and 2-5-2 record. The following season he managed to stay in the big leagues and put up numbers of 23-18-5, with a 2.36 GAA, but ended up finishing the season with Bridgeport again. None the less, after a year of lockout, DiPietro comes to the big leagues and puts in his FIRST full NHL season, where he put up a record of 30-24-5, with a GAA of3.02. This is a decent season, especially with the Islanders, and for reasons not obvious to me, ensured a 67.5M 15 year deal from the Islanders.

I can almost say nothing, but to sit here in shock.

Til next time..

WEEK ONE: San Diego @ Oakland

I'm back. And I'm back with a swagger. And that's the way it should be when your team shuts out a division rival on the season opener. And I'm gonna go ahead and say that saying "shut out" just doesn't give justice to what the Bolts did to the Gayders, I mean Raiders tonight. San Diego defiled the Oakland offense, and embarrassed them infront of their home crowd. With an absolutely mind-boggling 9 sacks allowed, Oakland is lucky to have left the game with a healthy quarterback. Brooks was nailed 7 times, which further dwarfed his completion total, which was 6. It's embarrassing to every Oakland fan to even have to read that sentence. Seriously, what was Tom Walsh (Oakland off. coordinator) doing with his off-season? He definately wasn't preparing the offensive line, and seemed to have no game plan that included the ever dangerous Randy Moss. He didn't utilize the out of pocket speed of Brooks, and Lamont Jordan was almost a ghost and unseen the entire game. Meanwhile, while the Bolts had to ball, they ran it down Oakland's throats. LT2 racked up the numbers and stats, and did every one of those fantasy owners who picked him above the overrated LJ a huge favor and gave them the go ahead to boast over all the LJ lovers. How many yards did LJ have this week by the way? Doesn't really put him on pace for 2200 does it?
Since Drew Brees left SD this off-season, and Coach Marty and AJ Smith announced that Rivers would be the man behind centre in SD, the neigh sayers and critics have been all over Rivers. People can't stop talking about how Rivers hadn't started an NFL game, and how he was no Drew Brees. So, ok, forget the fact that Rivers broke the NCAA record for passing yards in his 4 years there, and that he was picked 4th overall in 2003, I just want to bring up one name: Ben Roethlisberger. Big Ben was picked 11th in 2003, 7 picks AFTER Rivers, and what has he done in Pittsburgh? Something about a Lombardi trophy. Rivers has all the potential to do the exact same thing in SD, and tonight he showed that. He didn't light the Oakland secondary up, but he controlled the ball well, and man is he ever good at handing it off to the REAL man, LT2.
This was an absolute dominantion by the Bolts tonight, and they've made me so proud of them.
Til next time...

Opening Weekend in the NFL

Since my thoughts are near priceless, and everyone is dying to hear more about them, I decided to post them on the internet. This isn't going to be a blog about my love life, or lack thereof, nor is it going to be a blog about my inner most thoughts and feelings. This blog will be about something you actually might care about, and something that is actually important. Sports. Recently, I was given the opportunity to co-host a sports radio show on a local Regina radio station. As I am a procrastonator, and doubt the actuality of me actually getting things done and getting on the radio, I thought I would post my random thoughts about sports online. I will most definately be posting my thoughts weekly on the San Diego Chargers, as they are the NFL team that I live and die with. It's opening weekend in the NFL, and I'm posting this at the half time of the San Diego game (which looks like it may have a happy ending, and I don't mean the kind of "happy ending" you'd get in Thailand). After the game, I will post my thoughts on the ass-kicking San Diego is handing to Oakland.
Til next time...
